Google March Core Update – What Small Businesses Need to Know

Google March Core Update – What Small Businesses Need to Know

On March 13th, Google announced its next March 2025 Core Update and the rollout is expected to be completed this week. This update has the potential to affect your website’s visibility and online traffic, but we won’t see major results yet.

Luckily, most small businesses won’t be hugely affected. However, it’s still good practice to know what Core updates mean and how you can tailor your future SEO practices for search engine success. Let’s dive in.

What Are Core Updates & How Do They Work?

Google designed Core updates to ensure users only get relevant, helpful, and accurate results.

The Core updates slightly change the parameters of Google searches to keep up with web changes and content types and to promote valuable information rather than out-dated or spam websites.

The updates are also designed to be broad in nature, not to target specific sites or individual web pages.

For example, one aim would be to prioritise up-to-date content. In response, content writers and website owners will refresh old blogs to ensure they’re relevant for searches in 2025.

What Do We Know About The 2025 Update So Far?

So far, Google has provided little information about the changes it has made to the search algorithm. We’ll likely need to wait until the full rollout is complete in a few weeks before we can draw any strong conclusions.

However, initial changes include that in the week of March 10th, there was the most SERP (search engine results page) volatility seen in over a year. This perfectly aligns with the start of the update.

What Does This Mean For Your Business?

There’s no way to tell if the 2025 Google Core update will affect your business or website until you see a drop in online rankings. So, if you haven’t noticed anything yet, keep doing what you’re doing content and SEO-wise.

If you have noticed a large drop in position for your site (not just one or two pages or keywords), it’s time to check the quality of your online content.

Prioritise helpful, reliable, and honest content. Think about what your target audience is searching for, and tailor your content to their needs.

Don’t just spam keywords or copy-and-paste AI content—Google is starting to penalise sites for low-quality blogs.

Google offers an online content self-assessment checklist. This includes topics like:

  • Does the content provide original insights, research, or analysis?
  • Is the topic covered in a comprehensive and complete manner?
  • Does the content go beyond the obvious with insightful analysis?
  • Does it add value rather than just rewording existing sources?
  • Is the title descriptive, helpful, and free from exaggeration?
  • Is the content well-produced, free of errors, and carefully crafted?
  • Would readers find it valuable enough to share or reference?

Run through these and review the pages hit the most.

Creating consistent content takes more time than most expect. You might even want to work with a professional team to ensure you don’t get hit again in the future.
